Threats to Tourism in 2019 starting from Natural Disasters to Terrorism
Indonesia Kanal. One of the themes that will be discussed in the first Presidential Election Debate on Thursday (1/17) is the issue of terrorism. Like other industries in Indonesia, tourism is one of the most vulnerable to terrorism.
The Chairperson of the Association of Indonesian Travel Companies (ASITA), Asnawi Bahar, said that all tourism industry players, from tourists to hotel workers, are very dependent on handling terrorism cases carried out by the government.
The safety of tours has proven to be the main capital of tourism development, if we see Indonesia's failure to reach the target of 17 million foreign tourists throughout 2018.
The Tourism Ministry said that the reason was because of the Lombok Earthquake. But in the same year the Surabaya bomb also made the United States, Britain and Australia issue a travel warning.
"So, terrorism must not happen. I hope, the ultimate goal is not to increase terrorism again in Indonesia and state tools that intersect with that domain can work very actively and responsively," Asnawi said on Tuesday (1/15).
Meanwhile the Vice President of the Association of Flight Ticket Sales Companies (ASTINDO), Rudiana, said that not only terrorism should be watched out for, but also natural disasters and other events related to tourist safety.
According to him safety is an issue that should not be marginalized when talking about the tourism industry.
He added that the travel warning that was carried out several times by other countries also needed to be reviewed, considering that Indonesia was very broad.
"(The Government) Indonesia must be smart like Thailand. For example when there is a demonstration that claimed lives there, the government is quick to answer questions about security and can even stabilize the situation. We must have a standard of handling," Rudiana told CNNINdonesia.com , Tuesday (1/15).
For this reason, Rudiana hopes that elements of state security must be tightened. Plus, he continued, tourism must also have an early warning system.
Regarding natural disasters, Chairman of the Indonesian Tourism Intellectuals Association (ICIPI) Azril Azahari said Indonesia must indeed have a clear coordination pattern.
In fact, he added, Indonesia could create a new tourism pattern here, namely education tourism.
"During the Sunda Strait Tsunami yesterday, the related institutions should be able to calm down instead of the other way around. The concrete solution must be there. The mitigation and mitigation efforts should we (Indonesia) have, don't say the tools don't work," Azril said.
"Indonesia is the center of natural disasters, but the research center is actually in Hawaii. It should be if the government is aware, this (natural disaster) can be an educational tour especially for disaster researchers."
